This is a Very Old, Primitive Antique Spinning Wheel. The wooden frame is made entirely from hand carved pieces (except for a repair with a later piece as noted under Condition). The wheel is hand crafted bent wood.
The frame is assembled with wonderful mortise and tenon joints as seen. All of the iron fittings are hand wrought. This is an exceptional old piece! We do not know the age for sure but based on its wonderful primitive construction, I thought perhaps it might be 18th Century or older. If it is a 19th Century piece, I would think it was quite early. As found the spinning wheel definitely seems to be incomplete but despite this, it would be a great display piece or perhaps a good restoration project for a qualified restorer. Please see the condition section below for more details. The overall outside dimensions of the base are. 23 1/2" x 18 1/2" and the height is 32. As might be expected, this very old piece does have some condition issues as noted below.
I used arrows on the photos in two different ways. Green arrows are used to highlight some of the hand made aspects of the construction.
Blue arrows are used to point out some of the condition issues noted in this section. For both kinds of arrows, the same feature is sometimes indicated in more than one view. The hand carving is pervasive and obvious so I did not use arrow to note it.Please just review the photos. The condition issues noted are.
Missing parts - I know there are parts missing. I looked up information on the types of spinning wheels, terminology, and parts. Replaced spindle - as you can see, marked with a blue arrow, one of the hand carved spokes on the wheel has been replace with a later turned piece. The wooden rod that holds the wheel has a hand forged iron band around it on one end. On the other end, the rod is broken unevenly as seen and if there was an iron band here as well, it is missing. The top hand forged rod is not straight as you can see. I do not know if this is bent or if that is an artifact of its original creation. There are scuffs and scrapes on the wood in many places. Please review the photos and make your own assessment in that regard. The spinning wheel is offered as found / as seen / as described. International Buyers - Please Note.
