Description: Up for sale is one of the finest hand carved boxes you will find. In the center is the profile of the English Queen Adelainde. The insription reads: HER MOST GRACIOUS MAJESTY QUEEN ADELAIDE 1830. Queen Adelaide was queen of England from 1830 to 1837 and was married to King William. It is most likely that this box was made in the year 1830 in order to honor her coranation. It is possible that the craftsman was consigned by the English monarchy or this box may have been a gift to her from a member of the nobility. Whichever the case it is clear that the craftsman certainly was one of the most skilled of his day and would have been sought out. Made of solid Iron wood the center is a low relief profile of the queen surrounded by "white bone".
The center medallion is made of wood but I can not determine if it was carved or pressed. Either method it has great detail. The lid is threaded and screws to the base. Very nice radiationg cuts to the top and bottom of the box which lines up nicely.
I can only imagine the skill level to make this happen! The bottom is a wonderful chip carved star design. Please see all pictures for I have taken many....
